St. Edmond vs. IFAHD
Fort Dodge St. Edmond came to Iowa Falls on Tuesday, May 6. Results:
Varsity: St. Edmond 6, IFAHD 0
Junior Varsity: St. Edmond 4, IFAHD 1

Coach Jim Davies comments:
Lightening shorted the meet to only varsity singles matches being completed. The only once defeated FDSE team won all singles matches. It would have been nice to have had the doubles matches, but safety comes first.

IFAHD vs. Webster City
Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis traveled to Webster City on Monday, May 5. Results:
Webster City 8, IFAHD 1
JV: Webster City 6, IFAHD 5

Coach Davies Comments:
Many close matches. Melvin Brown played up a spot and won in three sets. Joey Longobardi's match lasted well over two hours and came down to a third set tie breaker. Quentin Silvey was absent so Paul Mason moved up to the fifth singles position with Nano Villegas playing sixth. Nano lost in three sets and Paul almost took his match to a third set. Steven Van Gorp's opponent is an excellent player with a powerful serve. All three doubles teams played respectable, but came up short.

South Hardin vs. IFAHD on 5-1-2008
South Hardin visited Iowa Falls and defeated the Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis team 9-0.
The IFAHD JV won 4 of 5 matches.

IFAHD Coach Jim Davies comments:
This rematch had the same overall results as the first time we met. There were two competitive varsity matches today, otherwise they were not even close. This was Paul Mason's first varsity start and he did very well. Mel Brown came close, but could not get the job done. There were some good points by the ten players who had a varsity singles or doubles match, but clearly not near enough to make a difference.

IFAHD at Grundy Center Results
Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis team were in Grundy Center on Monday, April 28 and came away with their first victory of the year in convincing fashion, 8-1.

Coach Davies' comments
Stephen, Joey, John, and Quentin pretty much led their entire singles matches. Stephen and Joey were also in control of their doubles match from the get-go.
The other matches were another story. Cold and gusty weather conditions seemed to bother Nano more than the others and he did not perform up to his usual standards.
The saying, "It's not over 'til it's over" applies to the #4 singles as well as the #2 and #3 doubles matches.
Mel Brown was down in each set and fought back to win each as well as the match. John and Quentin were down 1-6 and took the next seven games to win their doubles match 8-6. In #3 doubles, Jackson and Jordan got down early, but managed to stay within one or two games. Down 7-9, they took the next three games to go up 10-9. Brian Shuey then served four convincing first serves to tie the match at 10-10, sending it into a tie breaker. The tie breaker mirrored the regular match, but with Jackson and Jordan pulling away in the end.
"Any of the matches could have gone the other way. I was impressed and proud of how each player hung in there every point. It paid off this time, earning them their first team victory of the season."

Ballard,Huxley vs. IFAHD results
Ballard, Huxley came to Iowa Falls on Tuesday, April 22. Results:
Varsity: Ballard 7, Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont 2
JV: Ballard 8, IFAHD 4

Coach Jim Davies comments:
Nano Villegas, fresh off his second place finish in the South Hardin JV tournament, started varsity for the first time playing number six singles amd won in straight sets. Jackson Herzog joined John Scallon in the number three doubles and won 10-8. #4 Mel Brown and #3 John Scallon each lost in three sets. Turrell Foster and Michael Krogh had their first taste of varsity playing #2 doubles but came up short.
Conner Kline, Alex Brown, Jordan Richards, Mel Brown, and Clayton Valesquez all won JV double matches.

"I brought up some JV players to give them varsity experience. We also played two out of three sets in preparation for districts. They give it their best; however, inexperience and mistakes got us. But we are getting a little better everyday. I appreciate the guys staying late to practice and play. The positive influence of the members of the boys basketball team that went out for tennis is quite noticeable."

Results South Hardin JV Tournament 4-19-08
Members of the Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis team traveled to Eldora on Saturday, April 19, 2008 to participate in the South Hardin Boys' Junior Varsity Tennis Invitational. Eight singles players and eight doubles teams participated representing Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont, Dike-New Hartford, Grundy Center, and host school, South Hardin. No team scores were kept. The day started out with a cold and wet rain delay of one and one half hours. Summary of Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont results: Nano Villegas placed second and Jordan Richards placed fourth in singles. Turrell Foster and Michael Krogh placed third in doubles.

Coach Jim Davies comments:

I was extremely pleased with how everyone played. Overall, this was a valuable tournament for us giving each an opportunity for competitive playing time. Jordan played 90 games and Nano played 76 games. Turrell and Michael each played 60 games. While Ryan only played 41 games, he and the others were often out on the courts between matches hitting balls and playing games. After losing their first round matches, Nano Villegas and Jordan Richards fought their way back in the loser's bracket to face each other. Nano avenged a challenge match won by Jordan earlier in the week to earn a spot in the championship of the loser's bracket. After disposing of Damian Garcia of Dike, Nano played Spencer Nelson of South Hardin for the overall championship. He fell in a close match, 8-5.Who would have guessed that this was Turrell Foster's second week and Michael Krogh's first week of playing tennis and their first competitive tennis matches ever played. Turrell and Michael won two first round matches before falling to the eventual winners. I have seen as much improvement in one day in these five as I have seen in some players in an entire season. Especially Ryan Eagleburger, who, with Jordan Richards, lost two very close doubles matches in tie breakers. I am going to encourage them to challenge for varsity positions.

A special THANK YOU to Diane and Dan Nelson for hosting the tournament...a job well done!!

IFAHD vs. South Hardin results
Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis was at Eldora on Tuesday, April 15 to play South Hardin.
Results:
Varsity South Hardin 9, IFAHD 0
JV: South Hardin 7, IFAHD 3
Senior Joey Longobardi played number one singles today and took his friend and seasoned veteran Alex Nelson to 7-5 in the third and decisive set. This is Joey's second week of playing tennis. Senior Melvin Brown moved up to the number four spot and also took his match to three sets before bowing out 6-3. South Hardin had no trouble in the other matches and were never threatened.
Coach Davies comments:
Age appears to be a factor in the meets we have had so far. Our varsity is averaging a grade or more younger than every team we have faced so far this season. This is a learning year for us. I am seeing improvement in every meet. The players want to do better, so much so that some players went right to the tennis courts when we got back to Iowa Falls from the meet with South Hardin to play more tennis. That enthusiasm will pay off as the season progresses. Today's three set matches also gave a wake-up call to the team that we need to be in better shape. The IFA players decided they are going to come to practice 30 minutes earlier than usual to work on conditioning.

IFAHD vs. Oelwein Results
The Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont boys tennis team made the long trip to Oelwein on Monday, April 14 to make up a meet missed two weeks ago. Oelwein's senior dominated team won 7-2. Each JV team won five matches.
Coach Davies' comments:
Seniors Joey Longobardi and Mel Brown prevailed in their singles matches that went back and forth. John Scallon and Steven Van Gorp got behind early and were beaten easily. At one time Quentin Silvey and Jackson Herzog were up on their opponents, but could not hold on.
In doubles, Steven Van Gorp teamed with Joey Longobardi and got down early, but their comeback was not good enough and lost 10-7 to last year's doubles team that finished third in districts. Scalon played with Brown, and Silvey with Herzog, loosing both matches.
"Missing practices the last few days due to weather and a long bus ride were two strikes against us today. As a whole, the team needs to improve their reaction time to every shot and be less tentative about playing the net."

Individual Results of AP vs. IFAHD
  Varsity: Aplington-Parkersburg 9 IFAHD 0
JV AP 7, IFAHD 0
Location: Iowa Falls
IFAHD Coach Jim Davies Comments:
AP is a solid team. We are young, and we will face many teams with much more experience than we have right now. Every game we improve a little at a time becoming more confident with match experience. We need to work on our fundamentals and footwork as well as choose to be more aggressive and take some risks. I hope the players don't get discouraged. I really appreciate their efforts and believe in them.

Individual Results of Clear Lake vs. IFAHD
Varsity: Clear Lake 6, Iowa Falls-Alden/Hampton-Dumont 3
JV: IFAHD 7, Clear Lake 2
Location: Iowa Falls
IFAHD Coach Jim Davies comments:
I was very happy with the overall performance of the team. They played well and rose above their inexperience and the nerves of their first varsity competition.
I was particularly impressed how Stephen Van Gorp handled the pressure of starting at number one against a tough senior veteran. I've never seen him play so well.
It is also hard to believe this is Joey Longobardi's first year. His quickness and athleticism are outstanding.
Melvin Brown may have an unconventional game, but his tenacity earned him the victory.
John, Quentin, and Jackson had good opening matches regardless of the final score. I'm proud of how they did in both singles and doubles.
John and Joey's come from behind doubles victory showed good problem solving and ability to adjust to what the other team was doing. Their accurate lobbing even brought positive comments from the Clear Lake coach.
The JV did just great, especially given only one of the 14 JV players had ever played a competitive tennis match before this year.
Sure, there is disappointment when losing; however I have great hope for improvement. Today's experience has helped the players realize what they need to work on in practice and has given them a glimpse of what they can become if they make the commitment to work for it.
